About Us

Bridging the Gap for Spanish-Speaking Women to Achieve Health, Happiness, and Empowerment

Aldea is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Spanish-speaking women in Austin, Texas, through a comprehensive, long-term health and wellness program designed to address the root causes of intimate partner violence. Our program focuses on whole-person wellness, integrating physical, mental, emotional, and social health services to equip women with the tools and resources they need to break the cycle of abuse and live healthy, independent, happy, joyful lives.

Led by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, Aldea offers a culturally-specific and holistic approach to healing and development. We go beyond conventional health services, addressing also each participant’s economic, social, and legal needs. By partnering with a network of community organizations, we provide personalized support that empowers women to build resilience, improve their well-being, and prevent domestic violence.

What Aldea Offers to Participants:

  • Comprehensive medical evaluation (mind, body, spirit)
  • Comprehensive social evaluation (finance, housing, etc)
  • Action plan and follow-up
  • In-person education and health workshops
  • Individualized mentoring and coaching sessions
  • Access to professional services (medical, psychological, and social)

These services are designed to help participants find a job, start and grow their own businesses, stabilize their finances, find housing, and improve their emotional and physical health, to name just a few.

Our Story

During her work with a women’s empowerment program in Latin America, our founder Dr. Daniela Martinez realized that the only way to achieve gender equality was to empower women using an integrated, multidisciplinary approach.

She knew that until women have access to quality healthcare, mental health services, education, safe and stable housing, legal aid for immigration issues, adequate nutrition, and a supportive community in their native language, they will continue to be at risk for abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV).

Motivated by her lifelong dream to create lasting change for women and inspired by her past work experience, she went looking for a masters program that would give her the tools to make her dream a reality. She found it in the Health Care Transformation program at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas.

Research with her masters team helped inform and validate her belief that the only way to break the cycle of IPV for Spanish-speaking women in the US was by addressing root causes with an integrated approach to empowerment. Therefore Dr. Martinez designed an innovative model for an organization that would provide transformational services specifically for Spanish-speaking women. Aldea, “The Village,” was born.
